The Demonic System of Competition
The Screwtape LettersThis flow traces the conflict between Hell’s logic of possession and the divine model of distinct beings joined in love.

Bearing strength in each event
decreasing
Axiom of Selfhood

Separate Interests
Competition
Screwtape presents Hell’s governing assumption: each self seeks its own good at another’s expense. To exist is to occupy space and exclude others.
Consequence
This account makes domination seem natural and cooperation suspicious. It prepares the reader to recognize that demonic advice is itself an expression of the system it defends.
Love as Contradiction

The Unthinkable Alternative
Unity and Difference
Screwtape describes God’s vision as a unity that does not erase distinction. One being’s good can become another’s good without either being swallowed.
Resistance
He calls this impossible because his own outlook is formed by competition. His inability to understand love reveals the poverty of the infernal model.
Food or Family

Consumption Against Kinship
Infernal Desire
Hell wants beings to become food, increasing the selfhood of the stronger by consuming the weaker. Wormwood’s assignment and Screwtape’s appetite enact this logic.
Divine Purpose
God seeks servants who become sons while remaining distinct. The contrast makes the patient’s survival of the demonic campaign an ethical as well as spiritual victory.
The Household’s Mystery

Love Made Ordinary
Unexplained Goodness
Screwtape is baffled by a household whose members seem to care for one another without obvious advantage. Their ordinary life contradicts the expectation that every relationship conceals exploitation.
Human Scale
The family makes divine love visible without turning it into a lecture. Domestic affection becomes a small-scale challenge to the infernal theory of existence.
The Infernal Reversal

Love Reveals Its Opposite
Final Hunger
Screwtape’s promise to consume Wormwood makes Hell’s principle explicit. What sounded like professional affection becomes possession when the stronger tempter prevails.
Resolution
The patient’s entry into Heaven embodies the alternative: distinct persons joined without annihilation. The ending answers infernal competition through a relationship Hell cannot comprehend.
